Saint John the Baptist was the son of Zachary and Elizabeth, who was the cousin of the Mother of God.

He is called a prophet for he received from God the Mission top announce and prepare the people for the coming of Christ.

His name was designated by the angel who announced his birth to his father.

It is the belief of the Church that John the Baptist was born free of original sin, having been sanctified in his mother’s womb.

He is called the Baptist because he preached penance to the people and baptized the converted as a symbol of his deliverance from sin.

He was the man of whom Christ said, “There is no greater prophet among those born of woman.”

Saint John the Baptist was beheaded during the reign of Herod (first century).

His feast is celebrated on June 24.
